How many times have you wanted something, and then when the opportunity finally presents itself you freeze up and find yourself suddenly saying a lot of “Yeah, But….”. I know I have been there many times myself.
For some reason as humans as much as we want something, a different result or a new experience, we tend to not want to do what it takes to get there. Someone once said to me “It’s not change we are afraid of, it’s the transition” – oh how true those words are!
The transition keeps us stuck
To get what you want usually requires action that will make you uncomfortable, or is inconvenient, or costs money, or requires courageous conversations, or has a lot of uncertainty involved.
For example you may desire:
- To live somewhere different, but to move is an expensive upheaval
- To grow your business, but that requires investment in mentoring
- To bring in a new partner to your business but that requires diluting ownership and entering into negotiations
- To go on a trip, but that requires flying and hassle
- To increase your client base, but that requires a different marketing strategy
- To pay down debt, but that requires tightening up spending in the short term
- To achieve a new milestone in your business but that requires a conversation with someone who makes you uncomfortable, or asking for something that someone may say “no”.
- To fit into your skinny jeans, but that requires better nutrition and exercise!
This list could go on, however the point is, when you want to get from point A to point B, you need need to travel that distance between those two points, and when faced with what happens in between to make it happen, often times people will back out.
There are a lot of “yeah but’s” and “I can’t because” that can creep up and keep you from truly achieving what you desire, because that “in-between” of getting from where you are to where you want to go is just not a place you want to be, even though it’s only temporary.
Discomfort is always the doorway to transformation
Situations and other people can stop you temporarily, only you can stop yourself permanently.
Instead of focusing on the discomfort that the transition will no doubt bring about, I always encourage my clients to get really clear on the outcome they want to achieve and to keep their focus there.
And in those moments where it feels really tough, to step out of their own way and to remember that this discomfort is a temporary part of the journey to transforming what you have into what it is you really want!
