If you are a coach, or have been coached at any time in your life, you no doubt are familiar with the term “breakthrough”.
As a coach it’s something we want for our clients. It truly is a gift and an honor to be part of another person’s journey in such a profound and intimate way!
As a client, and I can speak from experience, there is something so magical about that moment when you can actually hear/feel the “click” in your brain and you suddenly see something that has been in front of you all along.
You see possibility where there was once problems, clarity where confusion existed, and you can see the magnificent outcome as if it already exists.
So, what do you with it?
A breakthrough means nothing if you don’t take action.
Sometimes those breakthroughs go completely unused, and quite frankly are wasted. If you don’t integrate what you learn, or what your new awareness is, you are at best storing knowledge, and nothing in your life or business will change. And eventually the knowledge, awareness and clarity reverts back to doubt, fear and confusion.
So why on earth would a person invest the time and money to get to the point of breakthrough and then freeze up? Simple, it’s because as human beings our nature is to resist change. Our subconscious mind wants to stay the same, our ego wants to keep us “safe” – so we resist taking the very action we now can clearly see that we need to do. Or we even run!
I’m not perfect and I can admit that at times I will be guilty of it as well. At every level of success, new wall is guaranteed to come up, for me, for my clients, for you too! Of course as I continue to up-level myself and the mentors I work with, whether it’s for personal growth, physical fitness, or business, they hold me accountable, and it’s almost impossible for me to back out of a commitment to myself.
But the breakthrough sure is wonderful…….
However even when there is resistance to action, most people still enjoy having the “breakthrough”. And this is where it gets dangerous, as the “breakthroughs” can be addictive. Because it feels like results and like you are going somewhere.
And to be honest, sometimes that breakthrough is the only thing they truly want. They may say they want results, however what you truly want is evidenced by your actions. And often times, the actions indicate loud and clear that what the person wants is to stay “safe”. And so to keep the feeling of momentum, and to hide the lack of results, they continue to seek more breakthroughs.
While it feels good to have that mental clarity that comes with a breakthrough, the goal should be what you will accomplish through the breakthrough, not the breakthrough itself.
Break Forward!
That is why, I encourage my clients to breakthrough and then break-forward. Get into action. In the MOMENT that you have clarity is the best time to act, as that is when you are really feeling empowered and pulled forward. And of course during this time, you need a lot of support and accountability so that you can stay focused on your greater good and keep taking action despite how scared you are.
